Due anni fa, mentre stavo per ottenere la sostituzione della cataratta, mi è stata diagnosticata una grave distrofia corneale di Fuchs in entrambi gli occhi. Se non trattato, questo alla fine porterebbe alla cecità totale. Le alternative chirurgiche tipiche prevedono la sostituzione della cornea o, più recentemente, l'inserimento di uno strato di tessuto epiteliale.
Fortunatamente, sono stato indirizzato a un chirurgo corneale di incredibile talento, il dottor Robert Weisenthal, a Dewitt, NY. Dopo un esame approfondito, mi ha offerto una nuova procedura chirurgica recentemente disponibile chiamata Descemet Stripping Only (DSO in breve). Questo DSO dovrebbe essere fatto appena prima di rimuovere la cataratta e inserire la nuova lente. L'intero processo richiederebbe solo 30 minuti, ma il recupero della visione completa sarebbe probabilmente un processo lento, che richiede da 2 a 3 mesi.
Il dottor Weisenthal ha detto che la migliore visione che potrei ottenere con DSO potrebbe essere solo 20/45. Ho fatto il mio occhio sinistro a settembre 2019 e poi il mio occhio destro è stato fatto a luglio 2020. Sono andato a un controllo di routine dei progressi il 29 settembre 2020 e sono stato molto contento di apprendere che il mio occhio sinistro è ora 20/25 e il mio l'occhio destro è 20/30.
Mentre scrivo, ho ancora bisogno di occhiali per leggere per correggere un lieve astigmatismo. Senza occhiali posso guardare fuori dalla finestra e godermi la vista così bella come non ricordo di aver mai avuto. Posso guidare senza occhiali! Dire che sono felice di aver colto questa opportunità sarebbe un enorme eufemismo. Mi sento molto fortunato e grato di essere stato indirizzato al dottor Weisenthal.
