Sono stato coinvolto con Open Arms Housing sin dall'inizio. Ho contribuito a raccogliere i soldi per acquistare l'edificio, ristrutturarlo e poi arredarlo. Sono orgoglioso di aver preso parte al primo progetto "Housing First" a Washington DC. Molte persone hanno rinunciato prima che completassimo l'edificio, dicendo che non avremmo mai potuto ottenere alloggi sostenuti permanenti in città. Abbiamo assunto la migliore direttrice esecutiva di sempre e, con i suoi talenti, Open Arms ora serve 40 donne che soffrono di malattie mentali e si è espansa da un edificio a siti sparsi per la città.

Questa è un'organizzazione senza scopo di lucro che è stata creata per ospitare alloggi per persone che hanno avuto crisi a causa di senzatetto, dipendenze, abusi, incarcerazione, disabilità funzionale e concentrandosi sui servizi sanitari delle donne (specialmente le donne anziane). Ci sono diversi edifici che sono per occupazione singola. La maggior parte sono monolocali e alcune unità con una camera da letto a Washington DC. I residenti vanno d'accordo senza gli interventi del personale del programma, che sono stati descritti come interruttivi, incompetenti, meschini, eccessivi e generalmente fastidiosi. Sebbene possano esserci grandi contributi da fonti esterne per il miglioramento dello stile di vita dei residenti, la maggioranza più ampia non lo riceve né ne è a conoscenza. Tuttavia, alcuni residenti selezionati personalmente sono invitati a essere visti per eventi di raccolta fondi se possono essere gestiti. Tutto sommato Open Arms Housing è una grande idea che è necessaria ma con più politiche verso l'empowerment attraverso il feedback dei partecipanti e il consiglio di tutti i residenti (senza la pressione del personale OAH per raggiungere gli obiettivi). Molto di più potrebbe essere realizzato con questo progetto se gli interessi della base residente-cliente diventassero più liberamente inclusivi con i fornitori che sono insolitamente evasivi quando è il momento di definire fatti che si riferiscono a $$$$ o tempo! Ma c'è un aspetto positivo: c'è un nuovo fantastico murale dipinto da LisaTalhamer sul lato dell'edificio OAH a 52 o St. NW, che è una dichiarazione di empowerment femminile piuttosto sfacciata. Dai un'occhiata quando arrivi, l'artista vive davvero nel quartiere.
