La Melbourne Mint, costruita tra il 1869 e il 1872, fu aperta per la prima volta il 12 giugno 1872 come filiale della Royal Mint di Londra per la produzione di monete d'oro. Poi nel 1916, dopo la federazione, iniziò a coniare monete d'argento australiane fino al 1969 quando tutta la produzione di monete si trasferì alla Royal Australian Mint a Canberra. Era un vasto complesso industriale e molto più grande di come lo vedi oggi. I laboratori, le fornaci, i camini e le sale di conio della Zecca furono demoliti negli anni '70 e il restante edificio amministrativo fu utilizzato come Royal Historical Society of Victoria e Registry of Civil Marriages negli anni '80. Oggi, l'edificio principale della Zecca funge da sede del Museo Ellenico, mentre il corpo di guardia settentrionale è stato trasformato in un bar e ristorante. La grande ex zecca reale è un punto di riferimento storico del XIX secolo, edificio in stile rinascimentale. Il muro perimetrale del complesso è un'imponente costruzione in mattoni con ampi cancelli in ferro battuto e lampioni in ferro. Spiccano stemmi dorati sulle porte anteriori e sopra il portico piccolo ma definito dell'ingresso principale sulla sua facciata rivolta a ovest. Tutto sommato, il complesso rimanente fino ad oggi riflette la crescente ricchezza e fiducia della Melbourne dell'era della corsa all'oro.
